TrotBot's Version 1 Linkage
Strandbeest, Klann, and TrotBot Ver 2
Speaking of Strandbeest, we'd like to thank Theo Jansen, our original inspiration. In his TED talk, Theo speculated that his Strandbeest was a new form of life that would propagate without his involvement. In a way, Team TrotBot is helping to make his prediction come true. Watching his mesmerizing videos helped to inspire us to tinker with linkages and mechanical walkers in LEGO, which led to TrotBot - kind of like a "descendant" of Strandbeest. Not sure if you meant this interpretation in your TED talk Mr. Jansen ;) but we'd like to thank you anyway. We thought about you often, especially when running into one of our many dead-ends in the garage!
Below is one corner of a 12-legged implementation of Strandbeest and TrotBot. For a large robot to walk as smoothly as a wheeled vehicle at least one foot should maintain contact with the ground at each corner. As you can see in this sim, we should have scaled up TrotBot with 12 legs like Strandbeest has:
